Rapper Coolio of “Gangsta’s Paradise” died accidentally last year from the combined effects of fentanyl, heroin, and methamphetamine, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. The county office also listed cardiomyopathy as a “significant condition,” a condition that makes it harder for the heart to pump blood to the body.
Authorities also found that Coolio’s acute asthma and smoking contributed to his demise. Jarez Posey, Coolio’s longtime manager, added the cause of death on Thursday. Born Artis Leon Ivey Jr. on August 1, 1963, Coolio passed away on September 28, 2022, in a friend’s house in Los Angeles. He was 59.
For “Gangsta’s Paradise,” a 1995 hit from the soundtrack of the Michelle Pfeiffer movie “Dangerous Minds,” which sampled Stevie Wonder’s 1976 song “Pastime Paradise,” Coolio received a Grammy for best solo rap performance. After initially relocating to Compton, California, Coolio was born in Monessen, Pennsylvania.
