Deion Sanders, a college football coaching legend and hall of famer, has struggled with foot problems for many years. The legendary cornerback dealt with these problems as a player, which only worsened with time. He eventually required surgery to amputate his left foot’s big and second toes after experiencing three femoral arterial blood clots.
Sanders’ blood clots, according to accounts, started in his calf but “ran the entire length of his leg.” He developed compartment syndrome, in which muscle pressure buildup can restrict blood and oxygen flow. Sanders’ mother confirmed these rumours, telling Deion that she and other family members had previously experienced blood clots that had caused numerous fatalities.
That prompted Deion Sanders to act right away. After a successful operation in 2022, Sanders might be spotted using an electric car or a cane. Fortunately, this did not affect his ability to coach at Jackson State, where he guided his team to a winning record and secured a position at the University of Colorado.
What happened to Deion Sanders’s foot?
Deion disclosed his surgeries on his damaged foot in 2021 during an episode of the SMAC Entertainment and Barstool Sports television series Coach Prime in March 2022. The former athlete disclosed that he had two of his left foot’s toes removed after being diagnosed with three potentially fatal blood clots. The episode detailed the operation and his three-week stay in a Mississippi hospital.

USA Today reports that the blood clots “started at his calf and ran the entire length of his leg, and he developed compartment syndrome, which involves muscle pressure reaching levels that can limit the flow of blood and oxygen.” Deion called his mother after learning about the amputation from the physicians. She told him that several members of her family, including herself, had been diagnosed with blood clots or had perished as a result
. Deion stated on Coach Prime that “they were first discussing the amputation of my toes, then the amputation of my leg from the knee down, and then they were trying to ensure that I had life.” He underwent multiple operations before having his left foot’s big and second toes removed. According to USA Today, Deion also dropped 35 pounds in the hospital.
“The hardest thing of it all was to look down there and see that and understand once upon a time you were this type of athlete, and [now] you don’t even know if you’re gonna walk because all you feel is pain and you just want to get out of the hospital,” he said. Deion continued, “It’s hard to ask for help with simple tasks,” but he reassured his supporters that he would get better.
“The road has been long. I’m heading home now,” he declared. But I’m still here, and I’m grateful.
Deion revealed his missing toes during an interview with Shannon Sharpe.
Deion isn’t embarrassed to talk about his health problems; he proudly displayed one of his missing toes during an interview with Shannon Sharpe in December 2022. It’s been a challenging year, he admitted to the former NFL tight end, explaining that his amputation was caused by turf toe. He informed Shannon, “They said my foot has been dislocated for 18 years,” and that as the head coach of a college, “I can make it through three-quarters of a game, and then I’m limping like crazy. My new normal is it.
Doctors warned Deion Sanders that he could eventually lose his foot.
Deion’s left foot troubles are far from ending, but he has continued to be active since having two of his toes amputated. Deion claimed he might lose his foot in an eye-opening film from The Pregame program that was shared on Instagram on June 14, 2023. The former professional football player acknowledged that the bottom of his foot is now completely devoid of sensation.
Dr Donald Jacobs, a vascular surgeon, confronted Deion with the grim fact that he would need to have his foot amputated despite his apparent openness to treatment. Deion left followers with the following message, though he hasn’t yet made clear what he intends to do: “You may trust and believe that we are all going through something — just retain the faith and know that if He brought you to it, He will get you through it… CoachPrime and I were made for this.
