The Westworld androids must now be farewelled. Even though creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy had hoped for a fifth season to reach the conclusion they had in mind, HBO has cancelled the science fiction series after four. Even as recently as October, Nolan and Joy attempted to reach an agreement for a final season, but their talks failed.

HBO stated in a press release: “The bar has been raised every step of Lisa and [Jonathan’s] mind-bending quest throughout the last four seasons. We appreciate them and their exceptionally brilliant cast, crew, and colleagues at Kilter Films, Bad Robot, and Warner Bros.
Television. Joining them on this adventure has been a delight.” With 54 Emmy nominations and a victory for Thandiwe Newton in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress, Westworld was once one of HBO’s flagship productions.

However, its ratings and viewership fell over time and never fully recovered. Fans took issue with the fact that the program wasn’t renewed immediately after the most recent season finished. The first season of the critically praised show drew almost 12 million viewers across platforms, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

And even though we believed that Westworld had found its footing in its third season, the show’s ratings continued to decline, and by the show’s most recent episodes, barely 4 million viewers had remained. That most likely isn’t sufficient for HBO to support renewal.

According to reports, the fourth season’s eight episodes cost the network $160 million, more than it spent on House of Dragons. The ten episodes of the Game of Thrones prequel attracted an average of 29 million views per.
