The initial Shrek debuted in 2001 and garnered more than $450 million in movie office earnings. Since then, DreamWorks Animation has released three more main features centered on the likeable green ogre and dozens of spin-offs.
Shrek Forever After, the most recent significant installment within the family series, hit theaters in 2010 and was supposed to bid farewell to the iconic namesake character. Fans have been hoping for the swamp creature to return to the big screen for a while now, and rumors of a fifth Shrek film have lingered.
Let’s discuss all we know about Shrek 5, from its release date and cast to any new information.
Shrek 5 Release Date
A recent leak suggests that the release date for Shrek 5 will be around the year 2025.
An NBCUniversal worker announced the film’s impending release on her LinkedIn page with the date “2025” in the description. The update was shortly taken down after being attacked by a legion of devoted followers.
On April 4, 2023, Dreamworks revealed that production on Shrek 5 has begun. Technically, development began in 2017, but was abruptly suspended as the epidemic ravaged the industry and the world.
Ironically, news that could threaten animation’s future leaked simultaneously with the release window. According to Dreamworks CEO and co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, the animation industry is trending toward artificial intelligence.
During his talk at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, he predicted that the following decade will be even more transformative for the media industry than the previous one had been. As for the time and effort required to finish an animation, he noted that back in “the good old days,” it would take about 500 artists and five years, but that in the near future, “it won’t take 10 percent of that.”
Some people reacted negatively to this, and this was a major factor in motivating the 2023 strike by writers and actors over AI safety concerns. We don’t know what this means for Shrek 5, but we certainly hope that the animators’ hard work will be highlighted.
What Might Happen in Shrek 5?
Unfortunately, we don’t know anything about the narrative of Shrek 5. Nonetheless, throughout the years, certain details have come to light.
Shrek 5 is going to be a “pretty big reinvention” of the franchise, as acclaimed screenwriter Michael McCullers said back in March 2017. To that, he added, “There’s been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they’re great characters, but you also have to think of a pretty new take at that point.”
Despite the fact that he declared as much five years ago in May 2022, Mike Meyers would be “thrilled” to star in a new Shrek film every year.
Even if the Shrek universe has changed, it’s clear that Meyers is eager to return to the part. It could be quite some time before we find out what’s next for the Shrek franchise.
