Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat from Michigan’s 11th congressional district, announced her divorce from spouse David Moore in a message to the Free Press on Saturday. “After considerable deliberation, we are heartbroken to announce that we are divorcing after 12 years of marriage,” Slotkin and Moore announced in a joint statement.

Both Slotkin and Moore were serving in Iraq in 2009 when they fell in love and eventually married in 2011. Slotkin is 46 years old and a former U.S. intelligence officer.
Moore, a retired Army colonel and former Apache helicopter pilot who also specialized in counterterrorism planning, was part of a U.S. team negotiating with the Iraqis; she was on her third tour of duty in Iraq as a Pentagon consultant. On the morning after Election Day in 2018, the Slotkin family farm in Holly, Michigan was bustling with activity as the couple and their two dogs, Dakota and Dixie, ran around and played. In Holly, on Slotkin’s family farm, where she spent her childhood, the couple tied the knot.
Slotkin, who served as acting assistant defense secretary during President Obama’s second term, ran for the House of Representatives in 2018 and defeated incumbent Republican Mike Bishop of Rochester, New York. Having previously defeated former state Sen. Tom Barrett, R-Charlotte, in a newly formed district in central Michigan, she was re-elected in 2020 for a third 2-year term.
Given his reputation as a successful campaign fundraiser, Slotkin is widely considered a frontrunner in the battle to replace U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) in the Senate. Stabenow will be leaving office in 2019. According to someone close to Slotkin, the divorce has nothing to do with the possible candidature and won’t affect her decision to run or not.
U.S. Representative Haley Stevens, Democrat of Michigan’s Birmingham district, filed for divorce from her spouse in October 2017. Also, Slotkin updated her financial reports from the previous year to include her husband’s employment with a company that got millions of dollars in federal contracts that she had previously omitted.
As Fox News Digital questioned her about her husband’s lack of a job listing in her 2020 and 2021 filings, she decided to make the necessary changes. She was ultimately successful in her attempt for re-election, garnering just under 52% of the vote against the Republican state senator Tom Barrett’s 48%. It has been widely speculated that Slotkin will succeed Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Michigan, whose term ends this year and who has announced that she will not seek reelection.
