Season 12 of Call the Midwife ended dramatically on the BBC in March, with unexpected births, deaths, and weddings keeping viewers on the edge of their seats.
While Trixie (Helen George) got her happily ever after when she married Matthew (Olly Rix) after years of heartbreak, tragedy was in the air when an expectant mother was involved in a car accident on the way to the maternity ward, forcing Dr. Turner to perform an emergency C-section in the middle of the road to save her unborn baby.
Now is the time to catch up on the first 12 seasons of the show, as season 13 won’t premiere until January 2024 (after the Christmas special).
“It’s an incredible privilege to look back on a decade of Call the Midwife and yet know that our journey is still very far from over,” said creator, writer, and executive producer Heidi Thomas at the time of the season renewal. We’re overjoyed to have been given a few more years to continue.

Netflix in the United States currently has all 11 seasons of Call the Midwife.
Season 12 is set to premiere on September 4, 2023, per the show’s typical release schedule.
Who will be Returning for Season 13 of “Call the Midwife?”
Several characters’ eventual outcomes were unclear as Season 12 came to a close. Fans worried that Helen George’s Trixie and Matthew would retire to a happy married life and never return to the show.
Not only did they have cause for concern, but so did everyone else. Despite Trixie’s widespread appeal, George has expressed genuine concern that she will be written off of the show.
The actress said, “You never have complete control,” when asked about her future on the show in an interview with Radio Times. Yes, that’s a real worry.
“You never know; they might reach a point where they decide, ‘Do you know what, we’ve got nothing else to say about your character. There is no longer any use for you. You can now depart. That’s just the way life is.”
That’s a rather terrifying scenario to imagine, but happily it won’t happen. Not any time soon, anyhow.
Olly Rix, who plays Matthew, told the Irish Mirror, “Their focus is on changing things around them.” It’s just not in their nature to give up the fight at this point and settle down. They don’t identify with that.
To quote the movie, “There’s no sense that he’s wanting to extricate himself or her from that.”
Furthermore, he said, “His money is something that facilitates that, but, money or not, that’s where his heart is.”
George elaborated, “They’ve got so much work to do there and they’re both very driven, so I can’t see them moving away.”
The good news for Rix fans is that he has no intention of leaving Call the Midwife after season 13.
The actor told Digital Spy, “At the moment, all I’m thinking about is Call the Midwife because that’s in front of me, and I don’t know what the future holds.
“I don’t know if the show wants me until 2026. They might not want to go there. I don’t know. One never really knows but as far as I’m concerned, I’m not looking for the next thing.
“I’m not looking to catch the next branch. I’m gripping the branch I’m on at the moment, and giving it everything I’ve got.”
Sister Monica survived her critical condition in the season’s penultimate episode, therefore Judy Parfitt will be returning to the role of Mother Superior in the future season. Zephryn Taitte will also return to the role of Cyril.

We hope to see Elliott out and about on her bike in Poplar soon because it’s hard to picture Call the Midwife without her.
Megan Cusack is another possible departing employee. Cusack’s character, Nancy, on Call the Midwife, has an uncertain future, and so does Cusack.
In the series finale, Nancy was given the chance to be closer to her daughter Colette by accepting a new nursing position. If she accepts, Cusack, who has been a part of the program since Season 10, would leave.
