According to a coroner’s report released on Tuesday, singer and rapper Aaron Carter inadvertently drowned in his bathtub after ingesting prescription medication and spray cleaner gas. Carter, 34, had recently used difluoroethane, a chemical frequently found in pressurized air cans, and alprazolam, the brand-name equivalent of Xanax, according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner-coroner.
The coroner noted that difluoroethane is a chemical that “can induce feelings of euphoria when inhaled.” Carter reportedly became “incapacitated while in the bathtub due to the effects” of narcotics and gas ingested, according to TMZ, the first site to disclose the incident. Carter slid beneath the water and drowned while wearing a T-shirt and a necklace.
On November 5, 2022, Carter, a 1990s heartthrob, passed away in his Lancaster, California, home. He was described as “a celebrity with a known history of substance abuse” in the coroner’s report and as having “multiple interactions with local police relating to the substance abuse.”
The woman who discovered him dead is described in the report as both a “house sitter” and a “housekeeper.” On November 5, she reportedly gave him coffee but got no response when she knocked on the door. She opened the door to the house and saw Carter submerged in the tub.

When the housekeeper dialed 911, CPR instructions were given. Carter was pronounced deceased by paramedics when they got to his house. Carter was reportedly last seen alive the night before his death by sheriff’s deputies, according to a police report attached to the autopsy results.
After Carter was observed “huffing” a can of gas during an Instagram Live video, they carried out a welfare check. According to reports, Carter asked the police to leave his house. The autopsy “is no closure for me,” according to Carter’s ex-fiancée Melanie Martin, who is also the mother of his one-year-old baby, in a statement to TMZ.
“I continue to be in disbelief and mourn Aaron every day. I don’t comprehend the sequence of events, and this article has only made us wonder more,” she said. Nick Carter, a member of the Backstreet Boys, has a brother named Carter. Three million copies of Aaron’s Party (Come Get It), his 2000 album, were sold.
