On Tuesday, fans of DC were treated to an exclusive announcement that gave them a sneak peek at what’s to come in the cinematic world of DC Comics in the following months and years. In the future, James Gunn and Peter Safran will direct Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2022), based on the Tom King comic book series, and The Batman Part II (with Robert Pattinson) in 2025.
In addition to Gunn’s Superman: Legacy (due out on July 11, 2025), there will be an animated Creature Commandos series, a spinoff of Peacemaker titled Waller (starring Viola Davis), a Lanterns series, a film titled The Authority, a series titled Paradise Lost (taking place before the events of the Wonder Woman films), a film titled The Brave and the Bold focusing on Batman and Damian Wayne.

James Gunn Unveils New DC Studios Slate
After promising fans that they would have something to show them by February 1, Gunn and Safran have finally presented the first portion of their schedule. It features established names in the superhero genre, and newcomers with the potential to become household names, like the obscure heroes of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy flicks at Marvel Studios.
On Monday, the two spoke with the media about their plans in a small, well-organized Burbank screening room on the Warner Bros. lot. “One of our ideas is to take our diamond characters — Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman — and use them to prop up other characters that people don’t recognize,” said Gunn.
To turn those lesser-known properties into tomorrow’s diamond properties,” Safran continued. The two cautioned that the order in which the following projects are set to appear in Chapter 1 is merely tentative and that changes may be made at a later date.

Creature Commandos
already in production, seven-episode animated series with a script by Gunn. This is a contemporary spin on the old monsters-united-against-Nazis notion. Without casting the voice actors, the producers are looking for actors who can do double duty as both the animated and live-action versions of the antagonists in the movies and TV shows.
Waller
Viola Davis will reprise her role as the brutal and morally ambiguous chief of a government task team in this sequel to Gunn’s own HBO Max hit series Peacemaker. Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Doom Patrol) are working on the script.
Superman: Legacy
Gunn is writing and maybe directing the Man of Steel film, although neither decision has been finalized. Superman is the genuine start of the duo’s DCU plans, with the two previous volumes serving as “aperitifs,” to use Safran’s words. Safran emphasized that this was not “an origin narrative.”
Superman’s struggle to reconcile his Kryptonian and human upbringing lies at the story’s heart. Truth, fairness, and the American way are all personified in him. He exemplifies generosity in a culture that views such traits as antiquated. The 11th of July 2025 is the target date for the release.
Lanterns
Unfortunately, Greg Berlanti’s Green Lanterns TV series, which had been in development for quite some time, has been canceled (and Gunn and Safran have parted ways with the longtime DC series steward). A new version of the space police equipped with power rings will take its place. Based on what we’ve seen thus far, our vision is similar to the style of True Detective,” Safran said.
In other words, “it has a grounding in the real world.” It’s one of the most critical projects they’re working on, and it will star the Lantern heroes Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The significance of this to the overarching narrative of the films and television shows produced cannot be overstated.

The Authority
A film adaptation of a comic book series by artist and current DC publishing chief Jim Lee, who created a squad of superheroes with some extreme methods of safeguarding the world in the late 1990s under the Wildstorm banner. “The DCU is not just a story of heroes and villains,” Gunn remarked.
A hero always emerges victorious in the end; however, not every movie or TV show will follow this formula. White, black, and grey hats coexist in our world. In the words of Safran: Like Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men, I suppose. They know that you want them on the wall. Or at least they believe that.”
Paradise Lost
The team edpitched this HBO Max project as a Game of Thrones-style drama set on the all-female island of Wonder Woman’s origin, Themyscira, complete ofof political intrigue and maneuvering between power figures. It takes place before the events of the Wonder Woman films.
The Brave and the Bold
According to Gunn, “this is the introduction of the DCU Batman, of Bruce Wayne, and it also introduces our favorite Robin, Damian Wayne, who is a little son of a bitch.” The film will be influenced by Grant Morrison’s seminal Batman run, which presented Batman to a kid he never knew he had: a vicious preteen who was reared by assassins. What a peculiar tale of a father and a son! It will also include a Batman who is not Robert Pattinson. But there’s also…
The Batman sequel
At the very least, one more crime saga film under Matt Reeves’s direction will see Pattinson reprise his role as the Dark Knight. The executives announced that the film, The Batman Part II, will be released on October 3, 2025. It will be a landmark year for DC in 2025, Safran boasted. In the same year, we have both Superman and Batman.
Booster Gold
An original hero from 1986 gets his own HBO Max series. Safran said of the series, “It’s about a loser from the future who utilizes basic future technology to come back to now and pretend to be a superhero.” Gunn described it as “imposter syndrome as a superhero.”
