Olympic Medalist Tori Bowie Dies at 32 After Complications During Childbirth

When a loved one passes away unexpectedly, it can be distressing. We are all saddened by the loss of Olympic medalist Frentorish “Tori” Bowie. After a well-being check on May 2, 2023, her body was discovered in her Orlando, Florida, home.

Tori, at only 32 years old, was a brilliant light and outstanding sprinter.

Tori Bowie Cause of Death

As of Tuesday, May 2, 2023, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office received a request “for a well-being check of a woman in her thirties who had not been seen or heard from in several days.” When they showed up at Tori’s Orlando home on Bowman Drive, they arrived at a tragic scene. The office wrote that a woman, “tentatively identified as Frentorish ‘Tori’ Bowie (DOB: 8/27/1990), was found dead in the home. There were no signs of foul play.”

More information on Tori’s passing became public in June of 2023. According to the postmortem results provided to The New York Times, Tori was eight months pregnant and in labor when she tragically passed away. The autopsy reported possible consequences include respiratory distress and eclampsia.

The death of Tori’s daughter, Ariana Bowie, was noted in the funeral program.

Tori is a native of Mississippi, where she quickly became a track star after establishing herself as a basketball great. She won the NCAA long jump title while attending the University of Southern Mississippi after graduating from high school and went on to compete in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. She ran the 100 and 200 meter events, and came away with silver and bronze medals, respectively. She was also instrumental in the United States of America’s 4×100 relay gold medal performance.

In honor of Tori’s amazing Olympic performance, her native Sandhill, Mississippi, has declared November 25 to be “Tori Bowie Day.” ‘I’ve never even thought about anything like this,’ she said to The Hattiesburg American. Back in Sandhill, a sign reads “Tori Bowie Lane” at the entrance to the grounds of her alma mater, Pisgah High. Things like that like these are miraculous to witness.

She hired a publicist and planned to immediately delve (or perhaps I should say run) into more acting and modeling, despite having previously stated that her priority was training. Although this was intended to be one of her career highlights, all that appears on her IMDb is her participation in the 2016 Rio Olympics, an interview on Today, and a role in the 2015 documentary Doped: The Dirty Side of Sports.

“We’ve lost a client, dear friend, daughter and sister. Tori was a champion… a beacon of light that shined so bright! We’re truly heartbroken and our prayers are with the family and friends,” the agency that managed Bowie said in a statement confirming her passing. In 2016, the runner competed in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, and her talents earned her three medals. While proudly representing the United States, she took home a silver medal in the 100 meter race, a bronze in the 200 meter race, and a gold as part of the 4×100 relay team. At the IAAF World Championships in 2017, she also won the top honor in the 100 meter race and became widely known as “the world’s fastest woman.”

“Her death was tragic enough, but to learn she died of childbirth complications breaks my heart,” one fan tweeted in response to today’s devastating report. Another shocked individual added, “The news about Tori Bowie is distressing! Black women have significantly higher chances of complications compared to the rest of the population. We saw these complications arise with another sports icon, Serena Williams. Just so sad.”
