As the release of the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid swims into sight, she will soon once again be a part of our world. Since its announcement in 2016, fans have wondered how Disney’s newest live-action remake would turn out; filming is set to begin in early 2021.

Most of the filming took place at London’s renowned Pinewood Studios after being postponed because of the pandemic. As the highly publicized production process has progressed, fans’ opinions on defining their beloved fictional mermaid have become increasingly divided. The Little Mermaid is scheduled for May 26, 2023, release in the United Kingdom and the United States. With the original filming schedule delayed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney fans will have to wait a little longer than expected to dive back into the ocean.

In 2019, Halle Bailey, better known as one half of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle, was cast as the lead role of Ariel. She has appeared in several television shows, including Grown-ish and Last Holiday, and has done work for Disney before in the film Let It Shine.

Melissa McCarthy, who everyone loved in Bridesmaids, will play Ursula, and Jonah Hauer-King, who starred as Laurie in Little Women, will play Prince Eric. King Triton will be played by Javier Bardem, previously seen in No Country for Old Men and Skyfall. Most of the film will be live-action, but several well-known actors will have voice parts.

Daveed Diggs, from Hamilton, will play Sebastian, and Jacob Tremblay, from Room, will play Flounder, Ariel’s other loyal companion. In addition to her role as Debbie Ocean in Ocean’s 8, Awkwafina voices Scuttle, who is now a female diving bird instead of a male seagull.

Since several new songs were added to the film’s soundtrack, viewers will likely pick up on subtle differences here and there. There have been some character adjustments made to accommodate the 2023 cast.

Loved by generations, “The Little Mermaid” tells the tale of Ariel, a young mermaid with a big heart and a yearning for adventure. Riel, the youngest and most independent of King Triton’s daughters, visits the surface and falls in love with the handsome Prince Eric.

While it is against the rules for mermaids to have contact with humans, Ariel must do what she believes is right. Wh n she bargains with the sea witch Ursula for a taste of land life, she risks losing both her and her father’s throne.

Is There A Trailer For The Little Mermaid?

Disney released a teaser trailer for The Little Mermaid in early September, though a full-length trailer for the film has yet to be released. Above, you can start watching. The teaser hints at the underwater world and the quality of the CGI is a hint as to what fans can expect.

We see Ariel singing a few lines from “Part of Your World” as she swims through a sunken ship and up to the ocean’s surface. On May 26,  023, The Little Mermaid will debut in theatres across the United Kingdom.
