With its four-episode miniseries relaunch A Year in the Life, Gilmore Girls made a huge comeback on Netflix in November 2016 after being off the air for nearly ten years and being missed every day during that time. The brief visit back to Stars Hollow only made the audience yearn for more.
Although several of the stories in each episode, most notably Rory’s (though we believe she got a bad rap), and the ending surprise were controversial, this hasn’t stopped fans from wanting to check up with their beloved Gilmore girls and learn what happens next.

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life season 2 hasn’t been renewed
A second season of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life has not yet been ordered by Netflix. The four-episode miniseries was created to be just that back in November 2016. Despite its early popularity, there was no projected immediate renewal.
However, as time has gone on and some fans’ initially negative reactions to the “final four words” have subsided, the desire for a second season of the miniseries has grown. The conclusion was meant to be a full-circle complete stop, but other people think it leaves a cliffhanger that warrants further investigation.

There were “no immediate plans” to return for a second season, according to Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel in April 2017. Graham continued at the time, “I’m not sure if there’s a need to take additional action. I don’t want people to think we stayed too long.
In November 2018, Amy Sherman-Palladino confirmed the same sentiments, stating to Vanity Fair that the leading cast members’ hectic schedules are taken into account when deciding whether to make another season of Gilmore, as well as whether to do so for a specific reason: “The story and the timing would have to be right. Putting it together the first time took a lot of work.
The creator reiterated her views on the barriers (or lack thereof?) preventing them from returning to Lorelai and Rory’s part of the universe. In October 2020 at the Woodstock Film Festival, Sherman-Palladino remarked:
“There’s no [obstacle] behind it except for lives and people doing [other] things. [A Year in the Life] was one of those kismet moments where we were kind of all looking at each other and going, ‘Well, let’s take a couple of months and hang out together and remind each other why we drove each other crazy.’ And it was a wonderful experience. I really do believe that if the time is right and the girls are where they need to be in their lives [it could happen].”
Sherman-Palladino emphasized that creating additional Gilmore Girls incarnations won’t present a problem in terms of story or conflict. There will be tales to tell as long as Lorelai, Emily, and Rory are involved in one another’s lives and as developments continue to affect them. But for those tales to be told, Graham and Bledel’s schedules must be free. Simply, the stars must once more align.
The cast is open to returning for more Gilmore Girls
Lauren Graham has been one of the cast members who has spoken out the most regarding the possibility of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life returning for a second season. Graham spoke with New Beauty in November 2022 about her latest book and The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. But the interview also gave us one of the most encouraging tidbits about A Year in the Life’s upcoming second season. Graham responded when asked if the show would be renewed:
“I’m making plans to see Amy [Sherman-Palladino], the creator of the show, in the next few weeks. It’s always a fun prospect to think about and talk about. It used to be more of just talk, but having done it now, we know it’s possible. I think I feel such a responsibility and so much love for the story that I would just want to be sure it was the right time.”
Not for nothing, but we’re curious to find out what topics Graham and Sherman-Palladino discussed during their meeting. Maybe we’ll hear more about that conversation when Sherman-Palladino’s Emmy-winning sitcom The Marvelous Mrs Maisel returns for its fifth and final season in April 2023.
In addition, various series performers like Alexis Bledel, Kelly Bishop, Scott Patterson, Milo Ventimiglia, and Matt Czuchry have been questioned and offered their opinions on the chances of returning for another episode. Over the years, they have all provided various responses, but they all centre on the same idea: they are open to returning, but it would have to be for the right narrative at the right moment.

Lauren Graham has maintained a full schedule since the Netflix miniseries debuted in 2016 with appearances on NBC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Disney+’s The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. (Both shows ended after a total of two seasons.)
However, the actress bargains for windows of time so that she can reprise her role as Lorelai for upcoming parts. She disclosed to SiriusXM in March 2021 that she has a Lorelai clause in each of her new contracts that maintain a window open in case she has to quickly return to her old haunts. Graeme stated:

Logan has been confirmed as the father of Rory’s baby
Fans have speculated who the father of Rory’s child may be ever since she said those fatal words to her mother in the closing moments of A Year in the Life: “I’m pregnant.” So, stop wondering now! The father’s identity has been made known: Logan! According to a story by TV Line from March 2023, a wardrobe supervisor for the revival admitted
on TikTok that the father’s identity is determined by math and Sherman-Palladino’s claim that Logan’s paternity should have been evident. In contrast, the author gave TV Line’s report a “no comment” response. Interesting! If another year of Lorelai, Rory, and Emily Gilmore’s lives is ever depicted in A Year in the Life, she may be trying to prolong the baby mystery.
