This has forced him to endure some of nature’s worst conditions. Military service broadened his perspective and strengthened his resolve. The mining crew will benefit greatly from having Fred on board.

Fans of Gold Rush have been enjoying its material for quite some time. The premise of Gold Rush might not seem particularly fascinating on the surface — until you know the ins and outs of mining. There’s obviously a lot more drama and expertise involved than we first thought.
People are easily drawn into the realm of mining by shows like the Gold Rush because they have no idea how complex the process of mining for gold may be. In fact, the show has motivated many viewers to try their hand at mining.
Newer Gold Rush fans may recognize Fred Lewis as one of the series regulars. He has extensive training, but not in mining specifically. The 14 years he served in the military as a Special Forces Medic and Green Beret are his credentials.
He has apparently been on risky missions all around the world. As such, he would probably like the challenges of gold mining and maybe have even more fun than when he and the rest of Park Schnabel’s team ventured into the Australian outback in Season 4 of Gold Rush: Parker’s Trail. (In 2019, in the third season of Parker’s Trail, Fred made his first appearance in the Gold Rush series.)
The background of Fred’s wife, who has occasionally appeared in the franchise, is also rather amazing. She’s also a veteran with a wealth of unique expertise that strangely applies to the mining industry.
Khara Lewis, Fred’s wife, is a former army psychological operations expert, according to a statement on their shared Facebook page. She’s not someone you can snooze on and can always be counted on to pitch in. They tied the knot in 2006 and have been happily raising a family ever since.
Fred (and Khara) have built a reputation as reliable characters who aren’t hesitant to speak their minds when necessary. Fred has a charismatic personality and has opened up about his life after the military, which is likely a topic of conversation between him and his wife.
“I’m like a lot of veterans, I’m still in my transition, even though I got out in 2009,” he previously said on Gold Rush. “Since I got out, I’ve gotten into green agriculture. I studied and got a master’s in education and a bachelor’s in science of web design. I never really found my path. I was a high school biology teacher, middle school history teacher, high school rec wrestling coach, volleyball coach, bouncing around trying to find something.”
