In a press release shared on M&M’s Instagram, the company explained how and why Rudolph was chosen to replace its well-known “spokescandies.” The red, green, brown, orange, blue, and yellow M&Ms got a makeover last year. Giving candies a “new, modern take” was the goal. Do the changes include?

Go-go boots were replaced by “cool, laid-back sneakers” on the Green M&M to express her unaffected confidence. People’s reactions to the shift sparked several memes and even some controversy. (In September, the company also debuted a purple M&M.) The press release acknowledges the online chitchat. “We’ve improved our cherished spokescandies throughout the past year.

We were uncertain if anyone would pay attention. We also didn’t anticipate it would disrupt the internet. But now we understand that even a candy’s shoes can cause controversy, which was the opposite of what M&M’S desired because our entire mission is to bring people together.

M&M’s has “decided to take an indefinite break from the spokescandies” in reaction. To fill their position, M&M’s searched for a “spokesperson America can agree on” and settled on “the beloved Maya Rudolph.”

At M&M’s, Rudolph (Twitter) holds the honorific “Chief of Fun.” She will assist M&M’s and Mars, the company that makes the candy, in “creating a world where everyone feels they belong” as the brand’s ambassador, an M&M’s representative tells TODAY.com.

How do her mom’s children feel about her new job as an M&M replacement? Rudolph claims that her children, Minnie, 9, Pearl, 17, Lucille, 13, and Jack, were “very delighted” for her. One of the Super Bowl’s conversation-starting moments will likely be Rudolph’s M&M commercial (aside from the game).

M&M’s “Come Together” advertisement was voted No. 4 on USA Today’s Ad Meter in 2021, while Snickers, another Mars product, had its 2010 “You’re Not You” advertisement named the finest Super Bowl ad of the previous 25 years by USA Today in 2020.

According to Gabrielle Wesley, Chief Marketing Officer, Mars Wrigley North America, “Mars has produced some of the most talked-about Super Bowl moments throughout the years, and we’re excited by the M&M’S brand being back in the mix in a fresh way for 2023.”
