In 1999, while still a graduate assistant at Colorado State, Lane Kiffin was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars as a quality control assistant in the NFL. Following that, Pete Carroll brought him on as the tight ends coach at USC. He coached wide receivers at USC from 2002–2004 and then served as offensive coordinator in 2005–06.

Kiffin became the youngest head coach in Oakland Raiders’ history in 2007 when he was hired for his first head coaching job with the team. However, internal tensions began to rise after a 4-12 season, and the Raiders ultimately fired Lane Kiffin as head coach. His record of 5-15 in the NFL was not good enough to keep his job for very long.
