Here’s the thinking behind The Witcher’s Netflix adaptation’s decision to make Ciri older. Until the release of the final game in the series in December 2019, The Witcher was most known for its accompanying fantasy video game series. Still, the origins of Geralt of Rivia’s story can be traced back to a series of novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski.
The main tale is divided into five books, and it follows Geralt as he tries to keep the young princess Ciri safe from those who would cut off her head. The computer game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt features Ciri, although the Netflix show is more faithful to Sapkowski’s novels.
The Netflix adaption, starring Henry Cavill as the title Witcher and Freya Allan as Ciri, focuses on Geralt’s early life and career. Using various overlapping eras, we witness the historical Geralt get involved in the affairs of Cintra, helping the cursed lover of Princess Pavetta, who, in turn, wants to express gratitude to the mysterious stranger who saved his life.
Without thinking much of it, Geralt requests the Law of Surprise, only to find out that Pavetta is pregnant. By the letter of the law, the future of this child, the one who will become Ciri, and Geralt, are now intertwined.
Season 1 of The Witcher takes place in the future in which Nilfgaard has invaded Cintra and the young princess, Ciri, is a refugee who has been ordered to seek out Geralt of Rivia, who would undoubtedly keep her safe. The first season of the Netflix show closes with the fated couple meeting, catching it up to the source material.

The Witcher Season 2 Release Date
Season 2 of The Witcher arrived on Netflix on December 17, 2021, nearly two years after the premiere of Season 1 in 2019. Sure that Yennefer was killed at the Battle of Sodden, Geralt takes Ciri to the only place he considers safe, the witcher stronghold of Kaer Morhen, to start Season 2.
Geralt has to face something far more deadly than the bloodshed and intrigue surrounding them, the force slowly but surely rising within Ciri. The release date of season 3 of the Witcher is scheduled in the earlier of 2023.
Has Ciri Been Recast In The Witcher Season 2?
In season 2 of The Witcher, Freya Allan returns as Ciri. She initially played a role in season 1. While the first season 2 teaser trailer premiered back in July, fans have been wondering if the actress has changed as Ciri appeared to look very different in the trailer.
Many variables have led to this hypothesis, including Freya Allan’s age and the fact that she has changed her hair, makeup, and wardrobe for season 2. The first filming season began in October 2018, when Freya was 17 years old; by the time it wrapped up in early 2021, she was approaching her 20th birthday, which could have resulted in some minor changes to her appearance.
In contrast, the hair and makeup departments and the characters’ wardrobes undergo the most radical transformation between seasons one and two. The most noticeable alteration is that Ciri’s eyebrows, which were previously a mousey blonde, have become a darker shade of brown.
Additionally, in Season 2, Ciri wears different garments better suited for training and action situations than the somewhat larger palace gown she wore in Season 1.
Who Is Ciri?
According to canonical sources for The Witcher, Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon (Ciri) is the sole legitimate princess of Cintra. Queen Calanthe’s granddaughter is the daughter of Pavetta and Emhyr var Emreis.
The Witcher was able to remove a curse from Ciri’s father before she was born, and in exchange for his assistance, the man agreed to let Geralt use the Law of Surprise when he met Ciri. Because Ciri’s biological father was unaware of Pavetta’s pregnancy, Geralt raised Ciri as his daughter.
How Old Is Ciri In The Witcher Season 2?
Ciri is 11 years old when Cintra is destroyed, and she is approximately 12 years old when she first encounters Geralt. This information comes from the source material.
However, in the live-action series, the showrunner decided to feature an older version of Ciri because child labor laws would not allow a younger actor to shoot many scenes during unsociable hours, as Lauren S. Hissrich explained in a post on Reddit. This decision was made by the showrunner.
This indicates that Ciri is supposed to be somewhere in the middle to late stages of her adolescence during the live-action series, given that she was supposed to be anywhere between the ages of 13 and 14 when the first season concluded. Freya Allan, the actress who plays Ciri, just turned 20 this year, so she is slightly older than her character.
