On Saturday, March 25, 2023, Gary N. Nelson, 72, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, died quietly in his home. The son of Carl and Joyce (Cashman) Nelson, Gary Norman Nelson was born on December 23, 1950, in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He was reared in Grand Forks and earned his high school diploma there in 1968. Gary joined the American Army soon after graduating and participated in the Vietnam War as an infantryman. On January 17, 1972, he was honourably discharged from the military.
After leaving the Army, Gary began working as a firefighter. In addition to his responsibilities as a firefighter, Gary also worked as a handyman and ran a painting and building company. In 1988, Gary wed Sharon Grabinski. He was renowned for his good humour, kindness, and passion for hunting, fishing, baseball, football, and family time. He was also known for these traits. On January 22, 2006, Gary retired from firefighting after receiving many honours.
Gary was a cherished friend, a friend of friends, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and more. With his contagious laugh and sharp humour, he had the unique capacity to brighten whatever space he entered. His sense of humour was legendary, and his laid-back demeanour had a way of putting everyone at ease.

As a devoted husband who always put his family first, a caring father who instilled in his kids the value of perseverance and hard work, and a cherished grandfather who never missed an opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchild, Gary will be remembered by his family and friends. He constantly made sure his family understood how much he loved them and was incredibly proud of them.
The children Christy (Mark) Weiland and Chad (Kylene) Nelson, as well as his siblings Donald (Vickie) Nelson, Douglas Nelson, Charles Nelson, and Carol Nelson, all survive him. He is also survived by his wife Sharon Nelson. His grandchildren Ashley (Bryan) Midgarden, Madison (Carter) Hunter, Trevor Weiland, Emilee Novak-Smith, Wesley Nelson, and LilaMarie Nelson, as well as great-grandchild Kenzie Midgarden, are also left to cherish his memory.

Gary’s parents passed away before him. Even though he is no longer with us, those who knew him will always cherish his memories. Many people’s lives were impacted by Gary Nelson, who was truly one of a kind. He will be greatly missed.
