He was born Michael Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone on July 6, 1946, inManhattan’ssHell’ss Kitchen. Frank Stallone Sr., a hairdresser, is his father, and Jackie Stallone, an astrologer and dancer is his mother. Frank Stallone, his actor and musician younger brother, is also in the family business.
Sylvester’s bottom left side of his face was paralyzed at birthing, resulting in his now-iconic “snarling” expression and slurred speech. As a result of his parents’ tumultuous relationship, Stallone was placed in foster care for a while. Eventually, the couple split up.
