Rupert Grint Says He’s ‘always Felt’ There Was An Expectation For Him And His Castmates To ‘fall Off The Rails’ After Becoming Child Stars

Rupert Grint, a former star of the Harry Potter film series, has stated that he had the impression that people expected him and his costars, all of whom grew up during the blockbuster movie production, to conform to the clichés of “child actors.”

In an interview with Bustle, Grint, who has portrayed the role of Ron Weasley in all eight Harry Potter movies, stated that he was consciously aware of such preconceptions and his wish not to live up to them.

“I’ve always felt there was this expectation for us to go off the rails, follow the child star cliché,” Grint told Bustle. “I’ve always felt there was this expectation for us to go off the rails.” That has always been something that needs to be fought against.

Grint and other cast members such as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Tom Felton spent his teenage years working on producing and promoting all eight Harry Potter films. Grint started filming “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” when he was 11 years old. By the time “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” was released in 2011, Grint was nearly 23 years old.

Grint and Watson admitted in the 20th anniversary “Return to Hogwarts” special, which debuted in 2022 on HBO Max, that they had, at times, pondered abandoning the franchise due to the pressures of filming and immense popularity.

Grint, who has a daughter who is two years old and is currently appearing in M. Night Shyamalan’s television series “Servant” and his next feature “Knock at the Cabin,” has gone on to seek school, start families, and other acting endeavors since the conclusion of the franchise.

Grint told Bustle that he “didn’t have a say” when participating in the 20th-anniversary reunion special but that reconnecting with his costars was a positive experience. He said being in the Harry Potter movies “was a unique experience only our core group know, so it’s nice to see them.”

“It was an excellent time to reflect on everything that had happened and acknowledge how crazy things had been. It is almost always enjoyable to reflect on the past, “he said.
