On December 14, 1946, Patty Duke entered this world in Manhattan, New York.
Patty was an actress who was honored for her work in film with a number of accolades, including multiple Emmys, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, and a plaque on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
She was also a well-known advocate for mental health in addition to her professional career.
Patty Duke Cause of Death
Actress Patty Duke, better known by her stage name Anna Pierce, passed away at the age of 69 from sepsis, a common but sometimes undiagnosed infection that claims the lives of 250,000 Americans annually.
Toxic blood illness sepsis, also known as septicemia or blood poisoning, is triggered by the body’s reaction to infection and is the ninth highest cause of mortality in the United States. Infection caused by a gastrointestinal perforation (also known as a burst gut) was the direct cause of Patty Duke’s death.
When Sepsis is in an Increasing Stage?
Although anybody can get septic shock following an infection, the elderly, infants and toddlers, those with compromised immune systems (due to cancer treatment or immunosuppressive medications), and those with preexisting conditions like diabetes, AIDS, cancer, or kidney or liver disease are at the greatest risk. With more frail patients and increased drug resistance, sepsis is on the rise.
Sometimes, septic shock can develop from something as little as a cut or scratch. A 12-year-old child named Rory Staunton tragically passed away because of missed opportunities to diagnose and treat his sepsis.
Symptoms
Early symptoms are frequently vague and may include nausea, vomiting, weakness, and diarrhea. In its early stages, it may be mistaken for influenza or another viral disease.
If a patient presents with the following symptoms, the CDC suggests strongly considering the possibility of sepsis:
Also emphasized is the need to say those words out loud to your doctor or healthcare provider: “I AM CONCERNED ABOUT SEPSIS.” I wonder how effective that would be, but even if it didn’t, I think it would be nice to have the reminder, especially in stressful situations. Again, early signs are not always obvious, therefore a quick intervention is essential for survival.
