What Happened to Christopher Reeves After His Accident?

Christopher Reeve, who played the title role in the 1978 Superman film and its three sequels, was a true hero in and out of the spotlight.

The actor’s life was changed by a horrible event, and he has since devoted himself to activism and philanthropy. More information on his life, work, and passing may be found further down the page.

What Happened to Christopher Reeves?

On October 10, 2004, at the age of 52, Christopher passed away due to heart failure brought on by an illness. In March of 2006, barely 17 months after the death of her husband, Dana passed away at the age of 44 from lung cancer.

Will’s parents have passed away, but he hasn’t stopped advocating for the organization they founded to aid people with paralysis and further research into spinal cord injuries, now known as the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. The late parents of the Good Morning America journalist seem to be watching over him.

“I feel it every day,” he told Closer in November of this year. Anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one will be confronted with reminders of their loss every day. By maintaining my independence and having experiences where I think, “Oh, that’s something my dad would have done,” I am reminded of him in the way I live my life.

Due to the extreme danger of the procedure, Reeve’s prognosis was not looking good as he prepared to have his skull reattached to his spine.

Naturally, this was a very trying period for Reeve as the significance of the surgery began to sink in. He subsequently said that his late buddy and fellow actor Robin Williams was the one who helped him get through this difficult time.

In his own words, “I lay on my back, frozen, unable to avoid thinking the darkest thoughts,” Reeve described his experience.

“Then, at an especially bleak moment, the door flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent. He announced that he was my proctologist (doctor of the rectum) and that he had to examine me immediately.”

Williams was acting out his role in the film Nine Months.

“I laughed for the first time since the incident. Thanks to my old friend, I realized that everything was going to be all right.

Williams and Reeve were good friends for a long time. At New York’s Julliard School for Drama, they were the only two students accepted into the advanced program and ultimately became a couple.

After Reeve’s death, Williams paid tribute to his late friend by dedicating his Golden Globe to him.

“Chris Reeve, I miss you. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest, sweet prince,” he said.
