Bob Barker is an animal activist and retired American TV game show host with a net worth of $70 million. He is widely known as the host of “The Price Is Right” who has been there the longest. Bob hosted the show for a total of 41 years, beginning in 1972.

Early Life

Robert William Barker entered the world on 12 December 1923, in Darrington, Washington. He is a confirmed member of the Sioux people, having been born and raised on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Mission, South Dakota, and appearing in the US Indian Census Rolls, 1885–1940.

To be exact, he is one-eighth Sioux. His mother was an educator and his father worked for an electrical company as a high line foreman. Barker was awarded a basketball scholarship at what was then Drury College and is now Drury University in Missouri. When he got there, he pledged the Epsilon Beta chapter of the Sigma Nu fraternity.

He joined the US Navy as a fighter pilot during WWII, foregoing his college education in the process, but the war ended before he could be sent to a naval squadron. After the war, he went back to school and graduated with a degree in economics.

In addition to his enormous wealth from hosting, Bob also found love with Dorothy Jo Gideon. Before her death at age 67 in 1981, he was married to his late wife for 36 years. The Washington native reconnected with love through his relationship with Nancy Burnet. 

The two become fast friends after meeting at an adoption event for animals in 1983. In August of 2022, Nancy said of her boyfriend on Closer, “I think his legacy is merely the lives—the millions of the animals that have not been born because of his show.”

Career

Barker worked at the Springfield radio station KTTS-FM while he was a student there. After that, he relocated to Florida and began working as a news editor and broadcaster at WWPG 1340 AM in Palm Beach (now called WPBR in Lantana).

Later, in 1950, he relocated to California and began hosting “The Bob Barker Show,” a radio program broadcast from Burbank. The program lasted for six years. He was discovered by game show producer Ralph Edwards while he was hosting an audience participation event in California.

In 1956, Barker made the transition from radio to television with the debut of “Truth or Consequences.” Up until 1974, he hosted the show. While hosting “Truth or Consequences” in 1971, he was approached by NBC about hosting a pilot episode of “Simon Says.” 

Then, in the early seventies, CBS showed interest in Mark Goodson and Bill Todman’s proposal to bring “The Price Is Right” back. Network interest was contingent on Barker being chosen as host. 

Thus, Barker took over as host of the updated CBS version of “The Price Is Right” on September 4, 1972. He stayed in the position until October 31, 2006, when he announced his retirement, and January 1, 2007, when he really stopped hosting the show.  

His farewell show, broadcast on June 15, 2007 was recorded on June 6. In April 2009, he came back to promote his memoirs; in December 2013, he celebrated his 90th birthday; and in April 2015, as an April Fool’s Day joke, he momentarily took over hosting responsibilities from the current host, Drew Carey.

Barker broke into the industry through bit parts and cameos. In Adam Sandler’s “Happy Gilmore,” he played an identical version of himself. He had little parts in soap operas like “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Nanny.”

Bob Barnacle, an animated series regular, was given life by him. In 1960, he played the role of Denver McKee on the television show Bonanza. The ‘Magic Jingle’ commercial campaign for State Farm Insurance featured Barker. 

In a commercial backing Republican candidate David Jolly in Florida’s 13th Congressional District special election in 2014, he made an appearance. Jolly was successful in his bid for a place at the table. In 2009, he was featured in an American public service announcement advocating for digital television.
