Robert William Barker entered the world on 12 December 1923, in Darrington, Washington. He is a confirmed member of the Sioux people, having been born and raised on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Mission, South Dakota, and appearing in the US Indian Census Rolls, 1885–1940.
To be exact, he is one-eighth Sioux. His mother was an educator and his father worked for an electrical company as a high line foreman. Career
Barker worked at the Springfield radio station KTTS-FM while he was a student there. After that, he relocated to Florida and began working as a news editor and broadcaster at WWPG 1340 AM in Palm Beach (now called WPBR in Lantana).
Later, in 1950, he relocated to California and began hosting “The Bob Barker Show,” a radio program broadcast from Burbank. The program lasted for six years. He was discovered by game show producer Ralph Edwards while he was hosting an audience participation event in California.
In 1956, Barker made the transition from radio to television with the debut of “Truth or Consequences.” Up until 1974, he hosted the show. While hosting “Truth or Consequences” in 1971, he was approached by NBC about hosting a pilot episode of “Simon Says.”
Then, in the early seventies, CBS showed interest in Mark Goodson and Bill Todman’s proposal to bring “The Price Is Right” back. Network interest was contingent on Barker being chosen as host.
Thus, Barker took over as host of the updated CBS version of “The Price Is Right” on September 4, 1972. He stayed in the position until October 31, 2006, when he announced his retirement, and January 1, 2007, when he really stopped hosting the show.
His farewell show, broadcast on June 15, 2007 was recorded on June 6. In April 2009, he came back to promote his memoirs; in December 2013, he celebrated his 90th birthday; and in April 2015, as an April Fool’s Day joke, he momentarily took over hosting responsibilities from the current host, Drew Carey.
