On March 29, 1945, Walter Frazier Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia, where he later attended David Tobias Howard High School. Being the only facility available at the all-black school in the segregated South at the time, he learned how to play basketball on a mud playground while serving as the team’s quarterback for both baseball and football.

He was allowed to play football, but he ultimately chose to play basketball at Southern Illinois University. In 1964 and 1965, Walt received a Division II All-American designation. Frazier guided SIU to the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1965, but his team was defeated by Jerry Sloan and the Evansville Purple Aces in the championship game 85-82 in overtime.

He was not a basketball-eligible student in 1966. Frazier assisted the club in winning the National Invitation Tournament with a 71-56 victory over Marquette University as they transitioned from Division II to Division I in 1967. He received the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award. Southern Illinois University ultimately decided to retire Walt Frazier’s number 52.

The New York Knicks selected Walt Frazier with the fifth overall pick in the 1967 NBA Draft. He was chosen to the NBA All-Rookie First Team because of his quick performance. His first of seven All-Star selections came in 1969–70, his third season in the league, and it helped the New York Knicks defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games to earn their first NBA championship.

When they faced the Lakers once more in the 1972–1973 season, they won their second NBA Finals, this time triumphing in a best-of-seven series in just five games. In 1975, Frazier won the MVP award at the All-Star Game. After the 1976–1977 campaign, Frazier was exchanged for Jim Cleamons by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

There were still three seasons left on his contract so the Knicks would pay a portion of his salary of more than $400,000. Throughout his three seasons with Cleveland, he only participated in 66 games before calling it quits halfway through the 1979–1980 campaign. In his Hall of Fame career, Frazier amassed 15,581 points, more than 5,000 assists, and 4,830 rebounds. Seven times, he was chosen for the league’s All-Defensive team.

The New York Knicks retired Walt Frazier’s No. 10 jersey on December 15, 1979. Along with Rick Barry and Pete Maravich, Walt Frazier was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. He was chosen for the NBA’s 50th Anniversary Team in 1996. When selected on the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021, he was once recognized as one of the greatest players ever.
