Tyre Nichols Cause of Death

On January 7, 2023, Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, was fatally beaten by five ex-Memphis police officers during a routine traffic check. His killing prompted protests in cities around the country and a federal inquiry into the actions of the officers involved. Nichols was a single dad who worked for FedEx and had a passion for skating and sunset photography.

An independent autopsy ordered by his family and lawyers found that he had been severely beaten, resulting in massive internal bleeding. The federal grand jury found civil rights violations and recommended termination for the cops, all of whom are Black. More information about Nichols’s life and death may be found in this article.

It was initially reported that Nichols had been stopped for reckless driving during a traffic stop. Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis then recanted his earlier statement, saying there was no evidence to suggest Nichols had committed any crime.

Two cops from the department’s SCORPION Unit (Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighbourhoods) were shown on body camera footage dragging Nichols from his car and putting him on the ground during the initial stop. As Nichols was having his legs held down, a third SCORPION Unit officer approached.

Nichols eventually got up and ran away after officers yelled at him in conflicting ways. Preston Hemphill, a former police officer, then tasered Nichols.

Nichols attempted to flee to his mother’s house, but police were hot on his heels. About a thousand feet from his mother’s house, a police officer located him. Nichols was then subjected to baton strikes, kicks, pepper spray, and more by the officers. Officers dragged his limp body across the pavement and propped him up against an unmarked police cruiser, leaving him bloodied and injured.

Officers hovered around the scene for the next 20 minutes as Nichols slouched near the car. When paramedics finally arrived, they didn’t seem really interested in helping Nichols. Eventually, in a serious state, he was rushed to St. Francis Hospital. Three days later, he passed away.
