Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been in development for a long time, possibly even before Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released in theatres. We’re working on the third installment and a Knuckles-centric spinoff series, so stay tuned! (who made his debut in the second film, voiced by Idris Elba).

The third Sonic film has yet to reveal any specifics, but its release date has been confirmed (which is below). There are aspects of the third film about which we can speculate, but keep in mind that this is all we can do at this point. In light of this mystery, here is what we know and can surmise about Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Sonic 3 Movie Release Date

Even though this year saw the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Paramount Pictures and Sega Corporation are already hard at work on Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Sega and Paramount set a December 20th, 2024, release date in stone following May’s announcement that the team was shooting for that year.

This was confirmed by the official Sonic the Movie Twitter account:

Since June, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has earned over $400 million at international box offices. On the other hand, the original film made nearly $320 million worldwide at the box office.

A voice actor for the new villain in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie is needed, and it wasn’t necessarily someone who had previously voiced the character, as was confirmed in a May update (like Tails). A live-action Knuckles series is also in production at Paramount and will premiere that same year. In December 2024, Sonic will star in his third feature film.

Who Will Be Reprising Their Roles In Sonic The Hedgehog 3?

Even though we don’t know who will return for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, we can still speculate. Ben Schwartz will return as Sonic, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey and Idris Elba will almost certainly reprise their roles as Tails and Knuckles, respectively. In the wake of Sonic 2’s release, Jim Carrey announced his plans to end his long acting career.

He seems “fairly serious” about taking a break from the business, so Robotnik might not appear in the third installment. Toby Ascher and Neal H. Moritz, the creators of Sonic, have stated that they “wouldn’t even try” to cast a new actor in part. “As long as Jim Carrey would like to be around, he will always have a place in these movies and TV shows,” Ascher said.

“What Jim does with Robotnik is incredible, and we all adore him for it. As long as he wants to be with us, we will love him.” Other human characters include Sonic’s “parents,” Tom and Maddie Wachowski (James Marsden and Tika Sumpter), Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub), and Green Hills Deputy Sheriff Wade Whipple (Adam Pally). Since Shadow may play a more prominent role in the third film, we may see Tom Butler reprise his role as Commander Walters.

We may also see Natasha Rothwell and Shemar Moore reprise their roles as Rachel and Randall, Maddie’s older sister and fiancé, respectively. Though Shadow’s arrival was teased in the end credits of the third film, the voice actor(s) who will be voicing him(her) remain unknown. While Kirk Thornton provides the voice for the character in the TV show, we anticipate a casting change when Shadow makes his big screen debut.

As Shadow’s co-writer Pat Casey explained, Shadow is “driven by anger and revenge,” so Sonic’s attempts to befriend him won’t go as smoothly as they did with Knuckles. “Shadow is the most emotionally damaged person Sonic has ever encountered, and every time he does, Sonic thinks, “Well, I’ll just teach him about the power of friendship, like with Knuckles!” Shadow, however, is immune to such tactics, “The Green Hill Zone podcast said.

Video clips were taken from YouTube and imported here. You could find the same material in a different format or more information on their website. Would there be any chance that other characters from the Sonic games, besides Shadow, would make it to the big screen?

In the games, Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather Gerald Robotnik and his cousin Maria Robotnik play critical roles in Shadow’s backstory. However, the plot may have been changed slightly for the film.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Plot: What Is Sonic The Hedgehog 3 About?

Despite the credit scene tease, the third film’s plot has yet to be confirmed. In this flashback to the climax, GUN once again searches the same area where he last saw Robotnik but comes up empty-handed. However, Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub) is spotted skulking around, suggesting that he assisted his boss in making a break for freedom.

And then we finally got our first look at Shadow the Hedgehog, who will no doubt return in Sonic 3 to cause all sorts of trouble for our hero. While he wouldn’t go into specifics, Fowler did express his enthusiasm to ComicBook.com.

“It’s still very early, so I’m hesitant to go into too much detail. I will say, though, that we are dropping hints about a character about whom I am very enthusiastic. As a fan, it’s deeply personal in a “What he did notice, though, was significant.

As for what the cast wants to see, O’Shaughnessey told Digital Spy that, first and foremost, she hoped Tails would be back: “I hope we get to see more and more of him and see where his gadgets can take everybody.”

Carry on, Carrey “A career in nanotechnology seems like a good fit for [Robotnik]. I want his technology made available as an aerosol that can be sprayed into the air and inhaled to transform humans into him.” Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Carrey will stay to see it through!

Schwartz isn’t spilling the beans on the movie’s plot, but he did give The Playlist a taste of what to expect. “Since we went all out for [the sequel], you can bet that number three will be completely out of control. It’s going to be so exciting; I can hardly wait.”

Is There a Trailer For Sonic 3?

We have a while to wait, as the first trailer for the sequel was released in December 2021, a full four months before the film was scheduled to hit theatres. On December 20 of that year (2024), you can go see Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
