Melinda Dillon, the star of A Christmas Story and nominee for two Academy Awards, has passed away. Age-wise, she belonged to the 83-year club. Dillon’s family released an obituary announcing the actress’s death on January 9th. No information on the cause of death was made public. Dillon began her acting career in the 1962 production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, for which she was nominated for a Tony Award; this was before she played the matriarch of the Parker family in the 1983 film A Christmas Story.
In 1967, Dillon appeared in the play You Know I Can’t Hear You When the Water’s Running, expanding her list of stage credits from the previous decade. Once she shifted her attention to film and television roles, she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the 1976 Woody Guthrie drama Bound for Glory.

Her first Oscar nomination came for her performance in Close Encounters of the Third Kind the following year, and her second was for her work in 1981’s Absence of Malice. Even though she retired from acting in 2007, putting Julie Hagerty in the role of Mother Parker for the 2022 sequel to A Christmas Story, Peter Billingsley, Dillon’s son in the film, told PEOPLE that the film was a tribute to the original cast, including Dillon’s husband in the movie, Darren McGavin, who died in 2006 at the age of 83.
In an October interview with PEOPLE, he described the film as “a love letter to the Old Man character and Darren himself.” “We couldn’t have asked for a better person than Darren. I felt like I had another father figure in him since he was such a wonderful person, a wonderful performer, and a mentor to me during the production of the first picture.” During the early 2000s, Dillon appeared on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Heartland, adding to his extensive television credits list. On Twitter, show writer Bryan Fuller commented, “Rest in power” after hearing the news of the actress’s death on Friday.
