With Christina Hodson, who wrote the screenplay for Robbie’s Harley Quinn movie “Birds of Prey,” had been collaborating on the movie. About Disney, Robbie added, “We had a concept and we were developing it for a long, years ago, to have more of a female-led story — not entirely female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been very amazing, but I suppose they don’t want to do it.
One of two upcoming “Pirates” movies, Robbie and Hodson were first linked to the project in June 2020, according to the Hollywood Reporter at the time. Robbie’s participation in the movie series was announced by Jerry Bruckheimer as recently as May of this year.
The Disney theme park attraction of the same name served as a loose inspiration for the first “Pirates” film series, which starred Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. All five had Depp as the lead, with supporting performances from Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, and Geoffrey Rush.

According to CNBC, the films’ combined global box office receipts of almost $4.52 billion make them one of the most lucrative movie franchises ever. But as the series went on, the reviews were progressively more negative, and as Depp’s public image declined, so did the likelihood of Sparrow appearing in further movies in the future.
Since 2019, Ted Elliott, the writer of the original series, and Craig Mazin, the creator of HBO’s “Chernobyl,” have been working on a remake of the series (unrelated to the aborted spinoff with Margot Robbie in the lead role). This year, Bruckheimer stated to the Times that Depp would probably not play the title role in any other “Pirates” movies, while the “future is yet to be decided.”

Meanwhile, Greta Gerwig’s eagerly awaited “Barbie” adaption, starring Robbie, will be released next year. Additionally, Ryan Gosling will reportedly appear in the “Ocean’s Eleven” prequel in which she will play the lead role.
