Netflix has earned a reputation for ending its shows before they can wear out their welcome, with some bowing out on their own terms and others being unceremoniously canceled with unresolved story strands.
Fortunately, in the case of Locke and Key, we’re dealing with the former situation, as the brand new third season was intended from the ground up to bring this fantasy saga to its conclusion.
That then, in this day of revivals and legacy sequels, few projects can ever be deemed firmly over and there are certainly some great stories from the Joe Hill comics that remain unadapted — including a crossover with The Sandman.

For now, here’s the dirt on why Locke & Key is ending after season 3 on Netflix.
Locke And Key Season 4 Plot
The new keys from Season 2 of Locke & Key are destroyed in Season 3, marking the end of the series. It’s a gratifying conclusion because the Lockes have finally realized how terrifying these keys would be in the wrong hands and that destroying them is the only way to keep the demonic invaders out of our world for good.
The truth is that Locke & Key’s runtime was always limited because the show’s youthful cast is a big part of its appeal, and now those actors are getting old. Every comic, and every adaptation of a comic, must adhere to the original story in some way.
Since the notion of Locke & Key is based on the purity of youth, the clock was always running. It’s common practice for Netflix to discontinue series after three seasons if they’ve not been successful in attracting new customers.
Despite the fact that it’s highly unlikely that season 3 of Locke & Key resulted in any new subscribers, the show’s popularity was obviously high enough for Netflix to greenlight a fourth and final season.
Except for very massive hits like Stranger Things and The Crown, very few Netflix Originals last more than three seasons. One of Netflix’s best, Locke & Key doesn’t have the mass appeal of the company’s other, rarer offerings.
Locke And Key Season 4 Cast
Season 4 would have been the natural moment to end the program, and if it had been greenlit, we would have seen the return of most of the core characters.
Considering I’m speculating about a canceled show’s last season, this is a strange place to be. Now, though, let’s discuss the potential cast members for Locke & Key Season 4.
Predicting something like that is really challenging. I believe all of the Locke children would have returned for Season 4. I also believe that if given the chance, their mother would have stayed for a fourth season.
Thus, Darby Stanchfield, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, and Jackson Robert Scott might have appeared in the show’s potential fourth season on Netflix. Locke and Key Season 4 news will be posted here when it becomes available.

Locke And Key Season 4 Release Date
Accordingly, given that Season 4 of Locke & Key will not be produced, there is currently no set air date for the next season. It would be fine if I ended the article right here.
But I want it on the record that I think Netflix should have renewed the show for a second season. The ending of Locke & Key Season 3 is a major factor in my belief. It left off on something of a cliffhanger note, with a potential last key being hinted at.
If they had given the go-ahead, production on a fourth season might have begun quite soon, and we may have seen it on the streaming platform in late 2023 or early 2024.
