King Charles Celebrates 74th Birthday As Monarch: Monday marks the monarch’s first birthday since taking the throne in September. On Monday, Prince William and Kate Middleton shared a special greeting on social media in honour of the monarch’s 74th birthday. The first members of the royal family to do so were the 40-year-old Prince and Princess of Wales.
With a picture of the King grinning, the post wished “His Majesty The King a very happy birthday today.” The photo was shot during his recent trip to Yorkshire, where he visited the Morrisons Supermarkets headquarters to learn more about the supermarket hub’s apprenticeship programs and sustainability initiatives.

Charles received a similar happy birthday message from Buckingham Palace on Monday, who also shared a behind-the-scenes look at the celebrations in London. At noon, the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery fired cannons in Green Park, and during the Changing of the Guard ceremony in front of Buckingham Palace, the Household Cavalry Band played a stirring rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

Charles has previously made it clear that he doesn’t take getting older seriously. During a visit to East London last month, a curious schoolboy asked the King out loud how old he was, and the King had the ideal response.

Since taking the throne in September with the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, Charles has celebrated his first birthday. The palace has not yet made public information regarding a Trooping the Colour celebration in his honour, as his mother did as king for 70 years before him, even though his coronation is scheduled for May 6.

According to Royal Museums Greenwich, King George II began the summer custom of a military parade in the monarch’s honour since, like Charles, his birthday fell in the frigid month of November. Trooping the Color has traditionally taken place on the second Saturday in June.
