Gruden was born to parents of Slovene ancestry on August 17, 1963, in Sandusky, Ohio. Jim Sr. eventually became a regional scout, quarterbacks coach, and director of player personnel for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in communications in 1985, Gruden worked as a graduate assistant coach for the Volunteers’ football team during the 1985–1986 season. He was Southeast Missouri State’s quarterback coach for two years.

The following year, in 1989, Gruden accepted a position as offensive assistant/tight ends coach at the University of Pacific. He worked with and coached Scott Lubow, a later-named All-Conference performer.

Gruden worked as a special assistant for the 1990 San Francisco 49ers season, assisting quarterbacks coach Mike Holmgren. In March of 1991, Gruden joined the coaching staff at the University of Pittsburgh as wide receivers coach for Paul Hackett.
