Early Life

John Samuel Waters Jr. was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 22, making his birthday that day. His three siblings, Steve, Kathy, and Trish, were also nurtured by his parents, Patricia Ann (a nurse) and John (a manufacturer of fire protection equipment), in a strict Catholic environment.

When John was 7 years old, he started doing violent puppet performances for kids’ birthday parties after watching the 1953 movie “Lili.”

Waters attended the Calvert School, Towson Junior High, Calvert Hall College High, and Boys’ Latin School of Maryland while he was growing up in the Baltimore neighborhood of Lutherville, where he also met Glenn Milstead (also known as Divine), his inspiration.

When John graduated from high school, he enrolled in New York University. He was expelled in 1966 though after being caught with marijuana on campus, so he swiftly went back to his hometown of Baltimore.

Personal Life
