Mahoney was most recognized for his role as Martin Crane on the groundbreaking sitcom Frasier. In this role, he regularly outsmarted his well-educated sons while remaining unassuming and good-natured. Over the course of 11 years, from 1993 to 2004, the show aired.

The theater group Steppenwolf shared the news of his passing on social media.

“It is with our deepest sorrow that we share the news that ensemble member of 39 years John Mahoney passed away,” they wrote. “Tonight’s opening night performance of You Got Older has been cancelled. We are instead inviting all to gather in Front Bar this evening. All are welcome to join us.”

Kelsey Grammer, who portrayed the lead on the comedy, simply penned, “He was my father.” I loved him.”

TMZ later revealed that Mahoney died from a confluence of illnesses, including brain sickness and lung cancer.

Mahoney was born in Blackpool, but he went to the United States as a young man after his mother was sent away to escape the Nazi bombings.
