Jerral The alias of Wayne Jones. Jerry Jones is a businessman who was born in the United States on October 13, 1942. Jones has been the owner, president, and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL) since 1989.

He has been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the 2017 class, and he has won three Super Bowls and been named an NFL Executive of the Year. Thanks to Jones’s efforts, the Dallas Cowboys are now the most valued team in all of sports.

How Old is Jerry Jones?

The legendary Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was born on October 13, 1942. According to my most recent information from September of 2021, he will be 80 years old.

In addition to his age, Jerry Jones is well-known in the sports world for his decades-long leadership role in the NFL and his unwavering devotion to the Dallas Cowboys. One of the most lasting personalities in professional football, his age has not stopped him from being an integral part of the team’s administration and decision-making.

Who is Jerry Jones?

Jerry Jones is the sole reason why the ‘Dallas Cowboys’ are once again a dominant franchise. Jerry’s first memories of football are from his days as a ‘running back’ for his university’s squad. Jones’s ‘National Championship’ squad included a number of famous persons, including both players and coaches.

After earning his master’s degree and experiencing some initial failure in the business world, Jones finally found success with his energy exploration firm, Jones Oil and Land Lease.

He grew the business and produced so much money that he was able to buy the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. Without hesitation, he made significant changes to the team’s management and administration, imposing his dynamic personality on the group.

The team’s finances also saw significant improvements thanks to his leadership. His tendency to say what’s on his mind has landed him in hot water on more than one occasion.

But despite Jones’s frequent coaching changes, his team’s on-field success never lasted, while the team’s financial resources only improved. While Jones may not be the NFL’s most beloved player, he is undeniably one of its most productive.

Jerry Jones Career

Following his 1965 graduation, Jones joined the family insurance business, Modern Security Life of Springfield, where he served as “Executive Vice President.”

In 1967, he had the opportunity to buy the ‘San Diego Chargers’ of the American Football League (AFL), but he passed it up to earn his master’s degree at the University of Arkansas instead.

He received an MBA in 1970 and tried his hand at many other businesses before finally finding success with an Oklahoma-based oil and gas exploration firm. In the following two decades, he grew fast, opening offices across the western United States and even into Canada.

In 1989, Jones paid H.R. Bright $140 million to acquire the NFL franchise known as the “Dallas Cowboys” and its stadium in Texas. The team’s performance was dismal prior to the purchase, with a 3-13 record.

A day after the purchase, much to the anger of the fans, he fired the team’s coach, Tom Landry, and replaced him with Jimmy Johnson, a college buddy of his. Even general manager Tex Schramm was only there for a short time before being replaced by Jones.

The next four years saw tremendous growth for the squad as Jones oversaw every facet of operations. Jones joined the ‘NFL Competition Committee’ in 1992, an honor rarely extended to club owners.

When the ‘Dallas Cowboys’ finally won the ‘Super Bowl’ in 1993 after 15 long years, they did so in a dominant manner by thrashing the ‘Buffalo Bills’ 52-17.

In 1993, Jones led the club to another ‘Super Bowl’ championship game, when they again defeated the ‘Buffalo Bills,’ this time by a score of 30-13.

In addition to winning games, Jones also led the squad to financial success. From 1993 to 1995, they held the title of “Most Valuable Franchise,” and for 160 straight games, every seat in every stadium where the club played was taken.

Jones fired Jimmy Johnson as coach in 1994 and hired Barry Switzer, a college classmate of Jones’s.

After repeating as ‘Super Bowl’ champions in 1996, the squad struggled for the next few years. Jones has fired five head coaches since then, but the Cowboys still haven’t been able to replicate their earlier success.

He was fined $25,000 by the NFL in 2008 for publicly criticizing referee Ed Hochuli over a call. He breached a gag order over labor difficulties the next year, and was once again severely punished for it.

His role as his own general manager has also come under fire. Jones told a reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2018 that his role as general manager facilitates decision-making and fosters open lines of communication with the coaches.
