K-pop artist Moon Bin, also known by his stage name Moonbin, passed away on Thursday at the age of 25, according to his management company Fantagio. On Twitter, Fantagio claimed Moon Bin had “suddenly left us and became a star in the sky.”

In addition, the statement said that “ASTRO members, fellow Fantagio artists, company executives, and employees are mourning the deceased in great sadness and shock,” adding that Moon Bin “always loved and thought of the fans more than anyone else.”

Who was K-pop star Moon Bin?

On January 26, 1998, Moon Bin was born in Cheongju, North Chungbuk Province. From 2004 through 2016, he worked as a child model and actor, making appearances in music videos and TV productions such as the popular KBS drama Boys Over Flowers, which debuted in 2009. At an early age, he enrolled in the Fantagio training program.

When they co-starred in the web drama To Be Continued, Moon Bin and his Astro bandmates got to know one another. They said in February 2016 that they will create a boy band with six members and call their first album Spring Up.

With Billboard magazine complimenting them for their “bright, synthpop sound that won over K-pop lovers from around the world” and placing them as one of the top-10 new K-pop groups that year, Astro had instant success in South Korea and Japan.

Moon Sua, a fellow K-pop artist and part of the group Billie, has since canceled and rescheduled her planned performances. Moon Bin is Moon Sua’s brother. Moon Bin and bandmate Sanha established Astro’s first side project, Moonbin & Sanha, and put out their debut album in 2020. An Asia fan convention tour that Moon Bin was scheduled to conduct in May has been postponed, according to the event’s organizers, in light of his passing.

Moon Bin’s manager discovered him unconscious on Wednesday night in his apartment in Gangnam, Seoul. In the absence of an autopsy, Gangnam police have not officially disclosed the cause of death, but officials have told South Korean news outlets that they believe he committed suicide. They further stated that there were no indications of foul play about the passing.

The singer and actor join an increasing list of South Korean celebrities who passed away at a young age. The 26-year-old actress Jung Chae-you’ll be discovered dead at her home last Thursday, although the exact cause of death is unknown. Goo Hara, 28, a member of the girl group Kara, was discovered dead at home in what authorities are calling a suicide in November 2018.

The following year, her 25-year-old close friend and singer Sulli also committed suicide. Minwoo, a band member of 100%, passed away at the age of 33 from a cardiac attack in 2018, whereas Jonghyun, the lead singer of SHINee, committed suicide in 2017 after struggling with depression.
South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, making it a prominent cause of death for young people.

According to the BBC, supporters have left flowers and letters at street memorials in South Korea and other countries. These memorials also featured purple and silver balloons, two hues that were prominently used during Moon Bin’s final performance in Thailand.
