Critics Under Fire for Fawning Over Ezra Miller’s ‘The Flash’

The Flash’s review embargo hasn’t yet been lifted, but favorable reviews of DC’s summer blockbuster are already drawing criticism online. After watching a sneak preview of the movie on Tuesday, many CinemaCon attendees started tweeting their positive reviews on social media, which infuriated some fans because they neglected to highlight lead actor Ezra Miller’s violent outbursts in recent years.

Miller is accused of strangling a lady at an Icelandic pub in 2020. The actor then experienced a few issues in Hawaii in 2022, where they were detained for disorderly conduct and second-degree assault. A 12-year-old and their mother were allegedly threatened by Miller, who was also accused of “acting inappropriately” toward the child.

Miller released a statement expressing regret for their conduct as Warner Bros. and DC debated how to distribute their finished film: In a letter to The Daily Beast, Miller said, “Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering from complex mental health issues and have started ongoing treatment.”

“I want to apologize to everyone that my previous actions may have shocked or disturbed me. I’m determined to put in the effort required to return to a stage of my life that is safe, secure, and productive. That occurred in August 2022. Miller is once again in the public eye as the film nears its premiere, along with all of the other disputes surrounding it.

Even so, The Flash has received nothing but praise from studio and DC executives; James Gunn, the new co-CEO of DC Studios, called it “fucking amazing.” Of course, people like Gunn are praising The Flash because they want to promote a movie. But as of late, a few CinemaCon critics have voiced similar sentiments.

Collider editor-in-chief Steven Weintraub tweeted, “I know Ezra Miller has made a lot of blunders but they are soooooo good in this movie. “Loved the action, humor, and emotion in [Michael] Keaton’s movies. Something exceptional was created by Andy Muschietti. A big thumbs up.

According to Scott Menzel of We Live Entertainment, “Ezra Miller is the movie’s heart and soul.” The entire narrative rests on Ezra’s performance. Ezra’s amazing talent as a performer is really on display in the dual performance.

However, some social media users are sick of hearing about how great The Flash is, especially with all of Miller’s justifications. In response to a question from a coworker, writer Kayleigh Donaldson remarked, “There are too many people in our field who will willingly aid the propaganda for a poster quote and goodie bag. I said no. Warner Bros. won’t struggle with its Ezra Miller redemption tour for The Flash.”

As can be seen in the tweets below, more people reacted negatively to the raves for Miller in particular. Given the arrests and accusations made against Miller, even if this isn’t really a circumstance that lends itself to “discourse,” we should expect to hear a lot more talk about The Flash as additional reviews start to come in later this year.
