Conrad Dobler Cause Of Death

Former Arizona Cardinals guard and all-pro star Conrad Dobler passed away recently. He was 72. The Arizona Cardinals announced on Monday, the day he passed away; the team did not specify the cause of death. Dobler was one of the best offensive linemen of his era and was known as the “dirtiest player” in the NFL.

As ESPN put it, “he struck Mean Joe Greene, he kicked Merlin Olsen in the head, he bit, he gouged, and once, he spit on a grounded and injured opponent, the Eagles’ Bill Bradley.”

A 1977 story quoted Dobler as saying, “I’ll do anything I can get away with to defend my quarterback,” embracing the moniker given to him. After retiring from the game, he was able to capitalize on this image by appearing in comedic television commercials that exploited his notoriety as a rogue.

Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill issued a statement saying, “Our sympathies go out to the family, friends, and former teammates of Conrad Dobler.” He was a “strong, physical, and fierce player,” the type you hoped to play alongside but feared to face up against.

“Conrad was a crucial contributor to the 1970s success of the Cardiac Cards on the field. When he was away from it all, he provided genuine happiness and care to everyone he was friends with, and that is what I will remember most about him.”

Dobler was a key cog in Hall of Fame manager Don Coryell’s Cardinals’ teams that won at least 10 games every year from 1974 through 1976. From 1975–1977, he was a member of the Pro Bowl. Dobler, selected in the fifth round in 1972, played with the Cardinals for six years before moving on to the New Orleans Saints and then the Buffalo Bills. He retired in 1981.
