Cheryl Burke, Former “Functioning Addict,” Speaks About “Putting My Sobriety First”

Cheryl Burke is committing to keeping her sobriety her top priority. The 38-year-old Dancing with the Stars pro makes an appearance on Wednesday’s Red Table Talk episode of Facebook Watch, where she opens up to co-hosts Jada Pinkett Smith and Adrienne Banfield Norris about her experience with addiction.

On the program, Burke admitted, “I used booze to numb.” “I’m an addict. I had an active addiction. People used to ask me, “What’s wrong with you?” when I wasn’t drinking.”
Despite having been sober for four years, she added that it has been challenging lately because of her ex-husband Matthew Lawrence‘s public divorce.

“Especially with this divorce, it’s not easy right now. It’s gesturing at me, “said she. “That’s not what I wanted. That wasn’t the plan since I wished my parents had stayed together. Undoubtedly, I’m not proud of it. There comes a time, though, when I must prioritize my sobriety and my interests.”

Burke continued, “One day at a time, one minute at a time,” is how she has been approaching her straight path. In August, Burke released a TikTok video to mark his four years of sobriety.

In the 11-second video, she responded to the question “What am I celebrating?” by writing, “Realizing I just celebrated four years of MY SOBRIETY.” Burke was seen posing in the video wearing various jackets and sunglasses while the song “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish played in the background.

Burke merely used the emoji ” in her TikTok post, along with the hashtags “#soberlife,” “#onedayatatime,” “#soberbirthday,” and “#sobrietyrocks,” among others. It has been beneficial for the dancer to be open about her sobriety difficulties, she recently stated in an edition of her Burke in the Game podcast, because “once you call it out, the stigma goes gone.”

Because that is the aim of the game, she said, “I’m trying to call it out.” “I’d prefer not even to bring up the subject. By communicating to you people, I’m holding myself accountable, which I believe is vital.” Every Wednesday at midnight ET/9 a.m. PT, new episodes of the Facebook Watch original series Red Table Talk are shown.
