Bad Bunny Sued by Ex Over Voice Recording

According to reports, an ex-girlfriend of the musician Bad Bunny is suing him for $40 million. The musician is accused of utilizing a voice recording of his ex-partner, Carliz De La Cruz Hernández, without her consent in his song. The musician won the Grammy Award for Best Msica Urbana Album for Un Verano Without Te during the ceremony earlier this year.

In the Bad Bunny songs “Pa Ti,” released in 2016, and “Dos Mil 16,” released in 2022, a recording of De La Cruz Hernández stating, “Bad Bunny, baby,” was allegedly exploited, according to the lawsuit, which Pitchfork was able to access. The video “Pa Ti” has more than 355 million views on YouTube at the time of writing, while the video “Dos Mil 16” had more than 63 million views.

The case, which was filed earlier in March, was first covered by the news outlet NotiCel in Puerto Rico. In it, De La Cruz claims that her voice and the term she coined are being exploited without her consent. You may find out everything there is to know about De La Cruz Hernández and her previous relationship with Bad Bunny in Newsweek.

Who Is Carliz De La Cruz Hernández, Bad Bunny’s Ex-Girlfriend?

De La Cruz Hernández and Bad Bunny, actual name Benito Antonio Martnez Ocasio, started dating in 2011, and soon after, they started attending the University of Puerto Rico together, according to the lawsuit, as reported by The Guardian.

The lawsuit claims that throughout their early years of dating, Bad Bunny would ask her input on his songs and rhythms. They also worked together at a grocery store in the town of Arecibo.
According to reports, De La Cruz was also in charge of organizing Bad Bunny’s schedule and managing contracts and invoicing.

According to the lawsuit, Bad Bunny proposed to her on January 1, 2016, but they broke up later that year after Rimas Music, a record label, signed Bad Bunny, and she was admitted to the University of Puerto Rico’s law school.

In 2017, they reunited for a brief period before breaking up. Later, in May 2022, a Bad Bunny representative allegedly called her and offered her $2,000 to purchase the recording of her voice, which she claims she made in a bathroom in 2015, but she turned down the offer.

The song was allegedly published without De La Cruz Hernández’s authorization, according to the lawsuit, despite a representative for Rimas Music making an offer to purchase it for inclusion in the then-upcoming album Un Verano Without Ti. A contract was never completed. The lawsuit also names Noah Kamil Assad Byrne as Bad Bunny’s manager.

In addition to being used in the songs themselves, the lawsuit claims that De La Cruz’s voice recording has been used for worldwide performances and promotions, as well as on radio, television, social media, and other music-related platforms.

“Since then, thousands of people have directly commented on Carliz’s social media accounts, and every time she enters a public space about the “Bad Bunny, baby.” De La Cruz now feels scared, distressed, intimidated, overwhelmed, and anxious as a result of this “claims the lawsuit. By email, Newsweek has reached out to Bad Bunny’s agents for a response.

She is currently a lawyer, according to her Instagram account. It’s unclear whether this decision was taken in response to the lawsuit news or if she had previously enabled this function because the account has disabled all comments beneath all of her Instagram postings.
