The Canadian-born Angela Seung Ju Lee was born on July 8, 1996, making her 25 years old. Lee, whose father Ken is Chinese and Singaporean and whose mother Jewelz is South Korean-Canadian, relocated to Hawaii when she was seven.

Both of her parents are practitioners of martial arts, and this naturally led to her early introduction to the sport at a young age. Her younger brother Christian Lee competes in mixed martial arts competition, and her younger sisters Victoria Lee and Adrian Lee (both born in Waipahu) also practice martial arts.

Angela Lee has won multiple pankration competitions, including the USA Amateur national championships in 2011 and the World Pankration Athlima Federation world championships in Greece in 2012. On February 9, 2018, third-degree black belt Mike Fowler and Lee’s father, Ken Lee, also a black belt, presented Lee with her black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

On November 2, 2014, at Destiny MMA: Na Koa 7 in Honolulu, Lee defeated Audrey Perkins to become the Destiny MMA strawweight champion in her amateur debut.

Career

Angela Lee made her promotional debut on May 22, 2015, at ONE Championship 28: Warrior’s Quest. She had signed with ONE Championship in 2014 and had submitted Aya Saber in the first round with an armbar.

After the victory, Lee decided to abandon her business studies at the University of Hawaii and instead join Evolve MMA in Singapore. She then proceeded to defeat Mona Samir via a first-round rear-naked choke at ONE Championship: Odyssey of Champions on September 27, 2015.

Commentators called Lee’s submission of Natalie Gonzales Hills in the first round of their third professional fight at ONE Championship 33: Pride of Lions on November 13, 2015, a contender for submission of the year.

At ONE Championship 39: Tribe of Warriors on February 20, 2016, Lee defeated Rebecca Heintzman with a neck crank in the second round. As a result of submitting her first five opponents, Angela Lee earned a title fight against Japanese veteran Mei Yamaguchi at ONE Championship 42: Ascent to Power on May 6, 2016. 

If she were to win, she would become the youngest mixed martial arts world champion in history. Lee received a SGD 68,200 bonus for winning the fight and becoming the first ONE Women’s Atomweight Champion. 

Her bout with Yamaguchi was called a “Fight of the Year” contender by the MMA press. After that, she renewed her contract with ONE Championship. There was much discussion about whether or not Lee’s new contract made her the highest-paid teen in mixed martial arts history, period.

The original fight between Lee and Mei Yamaguchi was set to take place on November 24, but it has been moved to One Championship Unstoppable Dreams in Singapore on May 18, 2018. Lee won by a landslide.
